One Injured & One Fatal Victim of a Head-on Collision
A head-on crash is among the most serious types of car accidents. In head-on collisions, injuries are usually more severe because of the devastating impact created by the combined speed of the colliding vehicles. Head-on collisions are often fatal, and victims who survive may face a lifetime of disabilities and complications from their injuries.
The Louisiana State Police has reported a number of fatal head-on collisions in just the last month.
On April 30, a head-on crash on LA 16 in Washington Parish killed a 40-year-old female Sun resident. The crash happened as the woman was driving her car east on LA 16. Her vehicle crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a pickup truck that was traveling west.
The woman suffered severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The driver of the truck was transported to a hospital for moderate injuries. He survived but is expected to have impairment from his injuries.
On April 25, a deadly crash occurred on LA 182 near Anointing Drive in St. Landry Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old Opelousas woman and a 43-year-old Opelousas man. The man was driving a Chevrolet Suburban and traveling south on LA 182, while the woman was driving a Honda Accord and north on LA 182. For reasons unknown at this time, the man’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck the woman’s car head-on in the northbound lane of travel.
On April 13, a two-vehicle fatal crash occurred on LA 14 near Huckleberry Road in Vermilion Parish, killing a 62-year-old female resident of Kaplan. A Ford F-350, driven by a man, was traveling West on LA 14, while a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by the woman, was traveling east. For reasons still under investigation, the F-350 crossed the center line and struck the Suburban head-on. The man suffered serious injuries, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Head-On Collision Stats
In a single recent year, there were 3,471 fatal head-on collisions nationwide – 10.1% of all fatal crashes, according to the Insurance Information Institute. This is despite making up only 2% of car accidents in the U.S.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, frontal impacts accounted for 56% of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in one recent year. And according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a head-on collision is more likely in a rural area, and 13% of all rural fatal crashes are head-on crashes. In urban areas, less than 7% of fatal crashes are head-on collisions.
Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Getting into a Car Accident
Even though driving is common and a necessity for many, it is still dangerous. You can take steps to reduce your risk of an accident. The tips below can better protect yourself and others on the roadways:
- Don’t drive when distracted. Using your phone, texting, and fiddling with the GPS or radio should be avoided when driving. Give your undivided attention to the road when operating a motor vehicle. That text message can wait. Your safety is far more important.
- Don’t drive while under the influence. Unfortunately, too often in Louisiana, drivers get behind the wheel with alcohol or drugs in their system, impairing their judgment and slowing their reaction time. If you’re out drinking, have a designated driver or hail an Uber, Lyft, or taxi.
- Watch your speed. When you exceed the speed limit, you put yourself and others at risk. The faster you travel, the less reaction time you have, and the more difficult it is to avoid an accident. As your speed increases, so do braking distances and all other force measures that can lead to catastrophic head-on collisions and other accidents.
